Nothing beats a summer road trip. Though all of the classic car shows we had planned to attend during the holiday weekend were cancelled, we still decided to pack up the kids and hit the road. We hit the road to explore the Central California Coast during the Memorial Day weekend. The Central Coast has a much different feel than our Southern California roots, but we enjoy the change of pace and scenery. The drive up highway 101 and US-1 are easy and often beautiful. We hope you enjoy some of the places we stopped along our weekend.
Our first stop when we arrived in Paso Robles was the Firestone-Walker Brewery. It's the home of the popular 805 beer, plus many of the breweries other signature craft beers. But the place just isn't for beer lovers. The taproom restaurant serves up some pretty good, family friendly food.
The Central Coast is a popular destination for wine drinkers, but we were traveling with the kids, so we opted for some sightseeing along the coast. This included stops at the Estero Bluffs near San Simeon to view the Elephant Seal Rookery. While in San Simeon, we also spotted some zebras along the highway which was unexpected. Also, near San Simeon is the popular Moonstone Beach in Cambria. During our daily drives we spotted a few cool cars along the highway. A nice surprise was a Memorial Day weekend display at the Veterans center in Cambria. After a lunch break in Cambria, we headed back to Paso Robles for dinner in downtown. Our favorite restaurant in Paso Robles in The Hatch Rotisserie.
The next day, it was back in the car to cruise along the coast. The first stop was the Montano de Oro State Park in Los Osos to explore the tide pools and caves along the shore. Not many animals or creatures to check out in the tide pools, but the kids enjoyed collecting beach rocks. Next, we took a short hike through the trails of the Los Osos Reserve Park to view the ancient oak trees. After lunch in Morro Bay, and a stop at Negranti Creamery for ice cream, it was back to Paso. We even lucked out at happened upon a small car show at a local brewery, Kilo Kilo. At night, we visited the Sensorio Field of Light which is a pretty cool attraction after dark.
We normally don't cover topics like this on the California Car Cover blog, but with our friends and customers getting back behind the wheel this summer, we thought our recent adventure might give you some ideas next time you are in the Central Coast. Travel safely.
